How Many Days Do You Need in Santo Domingo?
Three days is a good amount of time for a first visit. Spend one day exploring the Colonial Zone, another seeing attractions outside the historic center, and use the third for anything you missed or want to enjoy at a slower pace.
Is Santo Domingo Safe for Tourists?
Tourist areas are generally well protected, with specialized tourist police and regular patrols. As in any large city, be more careful at night if you don’t know where you’re going and avoid wandering into unfamiliar areas without a plan.
What’s the Best Way to Get Around Santo Domingo?
For most visitors, I recommend Uber. Taxis are usually more expensive, and public transportation can be difficult if you don’t know the city. The Metro is the exception — it is inexpensive and works well for certain routes.
What’s the Best Way to Get Around Santo Domingo?
It depends on what you want to eat. One of my personal favorites for Dominican food is El Conuco in Gazcue, and inside the Colonial Zone I like D’Comer Colonial. There are also many good everyday Dominican places beyond the restaurants most visitors first see.
How Can You Visit Santo Domingo if You Can’t Walk Long Distances?
You can still see a lot of Santo Domingo, but choosing the right route matters. Los Tres Ojos should be left out. The Colonial Zone has several flat, comfortable sections, but a walking tour still means spending more than an hour on foot. For travelers who cannot manage that comfortably, using transportation between attractions is usually a better option.
Can You Visit Santo Domingo With a Cane or Walker?
Yes, but not every attraction or type of tour will make sense. Los Tres Ojos should be left out, while parts of the Colonial Zone are much easier because there are long, relatively flat sections. Any walking tour still involves extended time on foot, so transportation between attractions can make the city much easier to experience with shorter walking periods.
